Fast Boat Bali – Gili Islands Lombok Likely Disrupted as High Waves Continue on 22–23 January 2026

Fast boat crossings between Bali, the Gili Islands, and Lombok may continue to face serious disruptions as rough sea conditions persist across the Lombok Strait and surrounding waters, according to the latest official marine weather advisory issued by BMKG (Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics).

Ongoing High Wave Warning

BMKG’s maritime forecast, valid from 22 January 2026 at 08:00 WITA until 23 January 2026 at 08:00 WITA, reports dangerous wave heights ranging from 2.5 to 6.0 meters in several key sea routes that connect Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands.

Affected areas include:

  • Northern Lombok Strait: 2.5 – 4.0 meters

  • Southern Lombok Strait: 4.0 – 6.0 meters

  • Northern Alas Strait: 2.5 – 4.0 meters

  • Southern Alas Strait: 4.0 – 6.0 meters

  • Northern Sumbawa Waters: 2.5 – 4.0 meters

  • Southern Indian Ocean (NTB): 4.0 – 6.0 meters

  • Sape Strait (North & South): 2.5 – 4.0 meters

These wave heights are categorized as high to very high, posing a significant risk to fast boat operations.

Safety Advisory for Marine Transportation

BMKG has issued an early warning urging heightened caution for all maritime activities. The advisory specifically highlights elevated risks for:

  • Small fishing boats

  • High-speed passenger vessels, including fast boats

  • Ferry services and larger commercial ships

Strong winds combined with large waves significantly increase the risk of unsafe crossings, particularly for high-speed vessels that rely on relatively calm sea conditions.

Impact on Fast Boat Services

Given the current sea state, fast boat services between Bali and the Gili Islands / Lombok may remain suspended or subject to last-minute cancellation, pending clearance from the harbor master and port authorities.

Operators will only resume service once:

  • Wave heights decrease to safe levels

  • Official permission is granted by the port authority

Passenger safety remains the absolute priority.

What Passengers Should Do

Travelers are strongly advised to:

  • Monitor official updates from operators and port authorities

  • Be prepared for rescheduling or alternative travel arrangements

  • Avoid traveling by sea during periods of high wave warnings

Thank You for Your Understanding
